Effective New Treatment for Postpartum Depression: A Breakthrough for Parents’ Mental Health

Postpartum depression isn’t just a concern for mothers—parents can experience it too, yet it has long been overlooked. A recent study has found that a new psychosocial intervention, Learning Through Play Plus Dads (LTP + Dads), is showing promising results in treating postpartum depression in fathers.

In a study conducted in Pakistan, about 70% of parents who participated in the intervention experienced a complete remission of depressive symptoms and saw improvements in their relationships with both their children and partners. This program combines parenting skills training, play therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy and is delivered by community health workers.

Why is this Important?
Postpartum depression in parents is more common than many realize. Around 10% of parents worldwide suffer from it, with rates in places like Pakistan reaching as high as 23.5%. However, despite the prevalence, mental health support for fathers has not been a priority, especially in patriarchal societies where gender roles often prevent people from seeking help.

The LTP + Dads program offers parents a chance to work through their emotions in a supportive environment. The study revealed that parents who participated not only showed reduced depressive symptoms, but their children’s socio-emotional development also improved significantly.
