Dealing with acne? You’re not alone, and there’s exciting news: laser treatments are making waves in tackling stubborn acne. Dr. Arielle Kauvar, a dermatologist and director of New York Laser & Skin Care, says lasers and energy-based devices are proving effective, especially when combined with other treatments.
At a recent conference, Dr. Kauvar explained why lasers could be a game-changer. Many common treatments like creams and antibiotics don’t fully address acne’s root causes. Isotretinoin (Accutane) works but has side effects that make some hesitant to use it. Lasers, however, not only treat active acne but also reduce scarring and dark spots.
So, what causes acne? It’s more than just oily skin—it’s linked to overactive oil glands, imbalances in the skin’s microbiome, and ongoing immune system inflammation. This inflammation can lead to scarring, making effective treatment critical. One standout option is the pulsed dye laser (PDL). It’s been shown to calm inflammation, repair skin, prevent scars, and fade dark spots. In a study led by Dr. Kauvar, participants saw a major improvement in acne and scarring after four PDL sessions, with no side effects.
While newer FDA-approved lasers like AviClear and Accure are promising, they’re not widely available yet. For now, PDL is a solid, accessible choice for anyone looking to up their acne treatment game. If you’re struggling with acne, it might be time to consider laser therapy. Talk to a dermatologist to see if it’s the right option for you!
