The Lasting Impact of a Sibling’s Loss

If you have a brother or sister—or have lost one—take a moment to reflect on how precious that bond is. SIBLINGS are often our first friends, our partners in mischief, and our lifelong supporters. The relationships we share with them shape who we are, influence our personalities, and provide guidance, comfort, and connection throughout life.

Losing a sibling is not just heartbreaking—it can also increase your risk of heart disease. A study of over 2 million people in Denmark found that those who lost a sibling had a 17% higher chance of developing heart disease, with even higher risks for heart attack (+66%), blocked arteries (+52%), and heart failure (+50%). If your sibling died from heart disease, your risk more than doubles (+154%), while even if they passed from another cause, your risk still rises (+13%).

The first year after such a loss is often the hardest, especially for teenagers. Losing a younger sibling or a twin can increase the risk further. Experts believe that grief and stress can trigger physical changes that impact heart health over time.

If this has happened to you, honor both your sibling and yourself. Cherish your memories, lean on friends and family, and take care of your body and mind. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed—grief is part of healing.

Siblings shape who we are, and losing one leaves a lasting mark. Protect your bond in memory, and protect your heart in life. Your grief is real, and so is your need for care.
