Have you ever checked your smartwatch and wondered how much you can actually trust the numbers? Nowadays, many people use smartwatches to track their heart rate, sleep and daily activity. These devices use sensors to collect information about our bodies. For example, many smartwatches measure heart rate by detecting changes in blood flow through the skin.Interestingly, not all measurements are equally accurate. Research suggests that heart rate measurements can be reasonably accurate, especially during certain activities, while estimates of calories burned are often less reliable. As a physiotherapy student, I think wearable technology can be useful for encouraging people to move more and monitor their progress. However, we should remember that a smartwatch cannot replace a medical examination.Personally, I believe these devices are helpful when we use them as guides rather than treating every number as a medical fact.Technology can support a healthy lifestyle, but understanding our bodies is still more important than simply collecting data.
