Folic Acid: Key for Future Moms

If you’re thinking about having kids now or even in the future, folic acid is something you should know about. The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) says that anyone who could get pregnant should take a daily supplement of 0.4 mg to 0.8 mg of folic acid. This small, simple step can help prevent serious birth defects called neural tube defects (NTDs), which affect a baby’s brain and spine. These defects can happen very early in pregnancy, often before someone even knows they’re pregnant. 

Here’s why it’s important: folic acid helps the baby’s neural tube develop properly, which later becomes the brain and spine. The USPSTF recommends taking folic acid every day if you’re planning to get pregnant or if there’s a chance you could become pregnant. Why? Every year, around 3,000 pregnancies are affected by NTDs, but taking enough folic acid can help prevent many of these cases. 

Some people worry that folic acid might be linked to risks like cancer or autism, but new studies show that it’s safe for both you and your future baby. 

It’s also essential to know that many people don’t get enough folic acid from food alone. Factors like diet, certain medications, or even surgery for weight loss can make it harder for your body to absorb enough. That’s why taking a supplement is an easy and effective way to protect your pregnancy
Even if you’re not planning on having a baby anytime soon, it’s still a good idea to take folic acid regularly if there’s a chance you could become pregnant, as I mentioned before. Good to know: NTDs form in the first 26-28 days of pregnancy.

Worth to note: Taking folic acid every day is an easy way to significantly support your future baby’s health. Talk to your doctor about including it in your routine, and make sure your multivitamin has the proper amount.
