Boost Your Mind, Protect Your Heart!

Did you know that your mindset as a teen can shape your heart health as an adult? A new study from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that teenagers who feel loved, confident, happy, and optimistic are more likely to have better heart health in their 20s and 30s!

What You Need to Know:

Five key mental health assets—optimism, happiness, self-esteem, a sense of belonging, and feeling loved—are linked to better heart health later in life.
Teens with four or five of these positive traits were 69% more likely to maintain good heart health into adulthood.
Despite these benefits, racial disparities still exist. Black teens reported the highest levels of positive mental health assets, yet were the least likely to maintain good heart health over time due to systemic factors like discrimination and social risks.
Building mental and emotional well-being early on may prevent heart disease and help reduce health inequities in the future.

What Can You Do?

Prioritize your mental health—talk to friends, family, or a trusted adult when you’re feeling down.
Practice self-care—get enough sleep, stay active, and fuel your body with healthy food.
Spread positivity—lift others up and create a supportive space for your peers.

Your heart isn’t just affected by what you eat or how much you exercise—it’s also shaped by how you feel. So, nurture your mind, because a happy heart starts with a healthy mindset!
