For many women, beauty salons are more than a place for self-care — they’re trusted spaces for connection and conversation. A new pilot project tapped into that trust by training stylists to talk with clients about HIV prevention and stigma. Through short training sessions, educational videos, and direct links to care, stylists became community advocates, opening the door to conversations that might not happen in clinics.
Clients reported learning more about prevention options like PrEP, feeling less stigma around HIV, and valuing the chance to talk in a familiar, supportive setting. Experts praised the approach as culturally relevant and scalable, noting the deep trust many Black women place in their stylists. With toolkits and larger trials underway, salons may soon become an unlikely but powerful front line in the fight against HIV.
