Did you know that playing games like Dungeons & Dragons can do more than spark your imagination? A recent study shows how tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) create safe, empowering spaces where autistic adults can connect with others, boost confidence, and even rewrite personal narratives.
In this study, eight autistic adults participated in a six-week online Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Guided by a skilled game master, participants created characters, navigated quests, and collaborated to solve challenges. Interviews after the campaign revealed that players experienced better social interactions during gameplay than in daily life, often feeling more comfortable expressing themselves and connecting with like-minded peers.
But why are TTRPGs so impactful? The structured gameplay and collaborative storytelling create clear social rules, making interactions more accessible and less stressful. Players can explore personal growth by stepping into their characters’ shoes, with in-game achievements translating to improved self-esteem and confidence outside the game.
For autistic players, this safe, inclusive environment offers a way to forge genuine friendships without the pressure to mask their traits. It’s more than just fun—it’s a powerful way to build community and confidence.
So, if you’ve ever thought about trying TTRPGs, grab some dice and dive into a world of imagination, teamwork, and self-discovery. Your next adventure might be the start of something transformative!
