Journey toward the self: Sexuality

Let’s dive into a topic that affects many of us—sexual orientation. This shouldn’t be a tabu but a lot of misconception and prejudice surround the theme. Whether you’re a teenager or a young adult it’s normal to have questions about your sexuality. Understanding who you are attracted to is a beautiful journey, and it can feel confusing at some times. That’s okay! Here’s what you need to know.

What is Sexual Orientation? Sexual orientation refers to the type of attraction you feel toward others. It includes:

  • Heterosexual (Straight): Attraction to people of the opposite gender (e.g., male attracted to female).
  • Homosexual (Gay/Lesbian): Attraction to people of the same gender (e.g., male attracted to male or female attracted to female).
  • Bisexual: Attraction to both males and females.
  • Pansexual: Attraction to people regardless of their gender identity.
  • Asexual: Little or no sexual attraction to others, though romantic attraction may still be present.

You might feel pressure to “label” yourself, but don’t worry if things feel unclear right now. It’s common for sexual orientation to evolve over time. Some people know their orientation early on, while others discover it later. Both experiences are valid.

Why Is This Important? Understanding your sexual identity is a part of knowing yourself. It’s not just about attraction, but also about feeling comfortable with your identity. A lot of young people struggle with accepting their sexuality because of societal pressures or fear of judgment. If that’s you, know that it’s normal to feel unsure. What matters most is that you take time to reflect on your feelings and seek out supportive friends, family, or communities.

It’s OK to Take Your Time There’s no deadline for figuring things out. Whether you identify as straight, gay, bisexual, pansexual, or something else, your sexual orientation is valid. You’re not alone—millions of people go through the same journey of self-discovery.

Support Is Key If you feel uncertain, anxious, or overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to reach out for help. Whether it’s from a psychologist, LGBTQ+ support groups, or even a close friend, talking about your feelings can provide comfort and clarity. Remeber that all feeling are valid, we all feel and love in a different way. Being different is precious, nobody has to hide their own uniqu self.

Don’t forget, your sexual orientation is just one part of the amazing personality. Embrace it with confidence and stay true to yourself!
