Oral Minoxidil Slows Hair Loss Progression

Female pattern hair loss is a common condition that impacts confidence and quality of life. While topical minoxidil foam has long been the standard treatment, a new study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology evaluated how low-dose oral minoxidil compares in slowing disease progression.

Researchers analyzed outcomes in 128 women with pattern hair loss, comparing those treated with low-dose oral minoxidil to those using 5% topical minoxidil foam.

Key Findings from the Study

Similar Hair Regrowth: Both low-dose oral minoxidil and 5% topical foam yielded comparable hair regrowth rates, with similar improvements in clinical hair density scores.

Lower Progression Risk: Women using oral minoxidil experienced significantly less disease progression over time (2.8%) compared to those using topical foam (21.1%).

Consistent Stabilization: Disease stabilization rates were nearly identical between the two groups (around 33–34%).

Practical Takeaway for Patients

For women whose main clinical goal is preventing long-term hair thinning and halting disease progression, low-dose oral minoxidil may provide a distinct advantage over topical alternatives, under proper dermatological supervision.
