From Salon to Health Advocacy

Imagine leaving the salon not only with a new look but also with life-changing information. A new pilot program is training hair stylists to share knowledge about HIV prevention, especially with Black women who face higher risks.

Salons were chosen because they’re trusted, comfortable spaces where open conversations naturally happen. After a short nurse-led training, stylists were equipped with accurate information about HIV prevention and PrEP, a daily pill that can greatly lower the risk of infection. Clients could scan QR codes to watch short videos on their own time, or get connected to professionals for testing, counseling, and access to services.

The results were powerful. Clients left with a clearer understanding of PrEP, and stigma around using it began to fade. By bringing health conversations into everyday spaces, this approach shows how trusted relationships can help close critical health gaps and empower people to take charge of their well-being.
