Have you ever studied all night for an exam and then struggled to remember what you learned? Many students sacrifice sleep because they believe more study hours always mean better results. However, sleep plays an important role in learning and memory. While we sleep, our brain processes and strengthens some of the information we learned during the day. This process is called memory consolidation.Research suggests that insufficient sleep can affect attention, concentration and the ability to remember new information. This means studying for longer is not always the best strategy, especially when we are already exhausted. As a physiotherapy student, I sometimes feel that there are not enough hours in the day for university, exercise and other responsibilities. But I think understanding the importance of sleep can help us make better decisions.Getting enough sleep, maintaining a regular schedule and avoiding unnecessary all-night study sessions may support both our academic performance and our health.Sometimes, the best preparation for an exam is simply getting a good night’s sleep.
