An innovative solution to insomnia: promising results with TVNS therapy

A recent study published in JAMA Network Open found that transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (TVNS) significantly improved sleep quality in people with chronic insomnia – and in just 8 weeks. The method involves delivering weak electrical impulses to a specific point on the auricle, stimulating the vagus nerve, which plays a central role in regulating the nervous system.

The study involved 72 participants who had been suffering from sleep problems for at least three months. They used the therapy at home, twice a day for 30 minutes – either on their own or with the help of a family member. The control group also received stimulation, but the current intensity was below the therapeutic threshold.

The results are encouraging: the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score decreased by an average of 8.2 points in the TVNS group over 8 weeks, compared with a 3.9-point decrease in the control group. This is a clinically significant improvement. Moreover, the positive effects were maintained at 12 weeks after treatment.

The method did not only have an effect on sleep: symptoms of depression, anxiety and fatigue also improved, while the rate of side effects was low and mainly limited to mild discomfort.

Although the exact mechanism is not yet fully understood, the researchers believe that TVNS could be a key therapy of the future – not only for insomnia, but also for depression, migraines and epilepsy.

This innovative, drug-free approach could offer hope to those who do not respond well to conventional treatments or are simply looking for an alternative. Although the study is still small, the results are promising and could open up new horizons in sleep medicine.
