Did You Know Your Brain May Have Two Origins?

What if your brain wasn’t originally designed as one single system? Scientists have discovered something surprising about how our brains developed over millions of years!

What Did Researchers Discover?

A 2026 study published in Nature Neuroscience suggests that the front and back regions of the brain develop from two different groups of early cells.

Researchers at Stanford University found evidence of this pattern in mice and other animals. Similar developmental differences were also observed in species whose evolutionary history separated from ours more than 550 million years ago!

Why Is This So Interesting?

The forebrain helps us think, learn, and make decisions, while the hindbrain helps control essential functions such as breathing and heartbeat.

Although these regions work together today, the findings suggest that their evolutionary origins may be different.

Could This Discovery Help Medicine?

Using their findings, scientists successfully grew functional human hindbrain motor neurons in the laboratory.

This could help researchers better understand neurological diseases such as ALS and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), which affect important nerve cells.

What Can We Learn?

Our brains may have a much more complicated evolutionary history than we imagined.

One brain, two possible origins, and over 550 million years of evolution! 🧠
