No Level of Alcohol Use Is Safe for the Brain

A major new study suggests that no amount of alcohol is safe for brain health, with even light drinking linked to an increased risk of dementia.

Researchers from the University of Oxford combined data from large observational studies with genetic analyses to investigate the relationship between alcohol consumption and dementia. While observational data showed a U-shaped pattern — with the lowest risk seen among light-to-moderate drinkers — the genetic analyses painted a clearer picture: alcohol itself appears to play a causal role in increasing dementia risk.

“Even quite small amounts of alcohol can potentially harm the brain and increase the risk of dementia,” said lead author Dr. Anya Topiwala. The study included data from more than 500,000 participants aged 56 to 72 in the US and UK, with genetic data from over 2 million people.

The genetic evidence showed that dementia risk rose steadily with higher alcohol consumption, and even moderate intake offered no protective effect. For example, increasing average consumption from one to three drinks per week was linked to a 15% higher risk of dementia.

The findings challenge previous research suggesting that moderate drinking might be beneficial and highlight the potential impact of alcohol reduction as a public health strategy. According to the authors, halving rates of alcohol use disorder could prevent up to 16% of dementia cases.

Experts caution that more research is needed, but say the study adds to growing evidence that limiting alcohol is important for protecting brain health.
