What lies beneath the surface of your water might surprise you.

Every sip of bottled water might contain more than you think — hundreds of thousands of nanoplastic particles, invisible to the naked eye.

In a groundbreaking U.S. study published in PNAS, scientists detected up to 370,000 plastic fragments per liter of bottled water — with 90% of them being nanoplastics, particles so small they can enter the bloodstream, cells, and even the brain.

Using a cutting-edge imaging method called stimulated Raman scattering microscopy, researchers revealed an unseen world within something as ordinary as bottled water. These particles, often derived from plastic filters and bottle materials, highlight how pervasive plastic has become in our environment — and our bodies.

While the health effects of nanoplastics are still unknown, experts warn that their tiny size may give them big consequences, with potential long-term risks for human health and ecosystems.

As one researcher put it: “This study opens a window for us to observe a world we were not exposed to before.”
