A recent study analyzing data from over 173,000 people found that those who sleep less than 6 hours per night have a 17% higher risk of developing hypertension. Even those getting 6-7 hours faced a slightly increased risk. Women and people under 60 seemed to be the most affected. However, sleeping more than 8 hours didn’t show any additional risk—so oversleeping isn’t the issue, but not getting enough rest definitely is!

Why does this matter? Hypertension is a major risk factor for heart disease, strokes, and other serious health issues. The good news is, improving your sleep habits can help prevent it! Here are some tips to get better sleep:

  • Stick to a schedule – Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
  • Limit screen time before bed – Blue light messes with your sleep hormones.
  • Create a relaxing nighttime routine – Try reading, meditating, or dimming the lights before bed.
  • Avoid caffeine late in the day – It can stay in your system for hours!
