One of the earliest and most telling signs of Alzheimer’s is spatial disorientation, patients begin to get lost and lose their internal “map” of their surroundings. To detect this decline at a very early stage, we need to know precisely what counts as normal navigational ability. And that requires a vast amount of data. Researchers solved this data gap with the mobile game Sea Hero Quest.
The concept is simple: players steer a boat, navigate through a map, and return to the starting point while the app records how they do it.
This citizen science project has produced astonishing results: data from more than 4.3 million people have been collected. The huge database of so-called “normative benchmark data” can be used for personalized cognitive diagnostics and to better understand what “normal” performance looks like.
Researchers were able to map how spatial orientation declines with age, and they also confirmed that, on average, men perform slightly better in navigation tasks.
With the performance data from Sea Hero Quest, scientists can now more accurately identify subtle, early deviations in people who are still symptom-free but genetically at risk.
