Silent Scars, Hidden Pain

Not all pain leaves a mark you can see.

A new study from California found that self-harm among U.S. adolescents has more than doubled between 2005 and 2021 — and it’s rising fastest among girls and multiracial teens.

By 2021, girls aged 15–19 had the highest reported rates of self-harm, with over 1,000 cases per 100,000 teens. Behind these numbers are countless young people fighting invisible battles — often in silence.

Researchers emphasize that awareness and support from parents, teachers, and peers can make a real difference. Recognizing early warning signs, listening without judgment, and creating safe spaces for open conversations are powerful acts of prevention.

Because sometimes the deepest pain doesn’t bleed — it hides behind a smile, a silence, or a simple “I’m fine.”

Let’s keep the conversation going, and remind every young person: your voice matters, your story matters, you matter.
